Is My Child Too Clumsy? When To Seek A PT Consult

All kids go through clumsy stages as they grow. Your 5-year-old trips over nothing on a flat floor, your 7-year-old constantly bumps into furniture in familiar spaces, your preschooler can’t quite catch a ball like other kids their age. And when you start to notice these new increased “oops” moments, you may wonder: “Is this just normal kid clumsiness, or should I be concerned?”

Some level of clumsiness is totally normal – as kids develop, it takes time and practice as they figure out their bodies. But when you’re noticing wobbles, stumbles, and falls that seem to be consistent and start to affect your child’s safety and confidence, it might be time to talk to a physical therapist.

What’s Normal Clumsy vs. What Warrants Concern

Kids develop at different rates, and there’s a huge range of what’s considered normal in child development – one child walks at 10 months, another at 15 months and both are fine and perfectly healthy.

The same goes for coordination – the culprit behind a kid’s clumsiness.

Most kids are naturally clumsier before becoming more coordinated as their bodies grow and their brains catch up. These gross motor skills usually resolve on their own with time and practice.

However, there are some red flags to be aware of when it comes to this motor development:

  • Your child is significantly less coordinated than same-age peers
  • They’re avoiding physical activities because they’re frustrated or scared
  • Coordination challenges are affecting daily stuff (getting dressed, eating, school)
  • They’ve had multiple injuries or frequent falls
  • Your parent gut tells you something seems different

What Causes Coordination Challenges?

Coordination involves a lot of brain & body teamwork and several things can affect how well that teamwork happens:

Sensory System Issues
The inner ear helps with balance, and proprioception (body awareness) helps kids understand where their body is in space. When these aren’t working smoothly, coordination suffers and kids become clumsier and less coordinated.

Core Strength
Kids need adequate strength in their core and shoulders to balance their bodies and move smoothly. A lack of strength in these key areas can lead to increased difficulty with large movements.

Motor Planning
Some kids struggle with figuring out how to make their body do what they want (motor planning). This can affect lots of movement, from writing and dressing to catching balls and playing sports.

Sensory Sensitivities
Kids who process sensory information differently may struggle with balance or avoid activities that challenge their equilibrium.

Signs Your Child Might Benefit From PT

Here is a specific list of things to keep an eye on when deciding if a PT consult might be helpful for your child.

Remember, these are all things that kids do normally to some degree, it’s when they become persistent and impact daily life that they are worth a closer look.

Balance & Coordination:

  • Frequent tripping on flat surfaces
  • Trouble walking on stairs
  • Difficulty catching or kicking a ball
  • Poor balance when standing on one foot

Strength & Endurance:

  • Tires easily during normal play
  • Struggles to climb age appropriate playground equipment
  • Seems to have poor posture or slouches constantly

Daily Life Impact:

  • Difficulty with self-care (buttons, zippers, eating with utensils)
  • Teachers expressing concerns about PE or handwriting
  • Avoiding activities other kids enjoy
  • Expressing frustration about movement or low confidence

Behavior Clues:

  • Won’t try new physical activities
  • Seems anxious about movement challenges
  • Getting injured more often than peers

How Physical Therapy Can Help

Physical therapy (PT) is one of the simplest but most effective ways to help kids build the strength, coordination, and confidence to successfully move through daily life.

What happens during PT

During a PT session, physical therapists observe how your child moves during play, assess their balance and strength, and then determine what’s making movement and coordination challenging. Then they will create a plan using games, play, and activities all based on your child’s specific needs and goals.

And at Beyond Speech, we do it all in the comfort of your own home! In-home therapy allows your child to learn skills in the places they’ll use them most – their own house, yard, and neighborhood.

How Physical Therapy works

Just like any muscle, skill, or activity that we want to improve and strengthen, consistent and regular repetition is what creates improvement. And that’s what physical therapy does.

With regular therapy, kids often show rapid improvement – many parents notice real changes within 4-6 weeks – because they are getting stronger and more confident with each rep.

Should You Get an Evaluation?

A good thing to know is that you don’t need a formal diagnosis to seek a PT consult and therapy session. A physical therapist can evaluate your child and create a therapy plan for them and if further treatment is needed, they can also assist you through that process as well.

It may be time to seek evaluation if:

  • Your child is noticeably less coordinated than peers
  • They’re avoiding activities because of difficulty or fear
  • Coordination challenges are affecting school or daily life
  • You’re concerned enough to want professional input

An evaluation is simply getting expert information and does not obligate you to further therapy.

At Beyond Speech Therapy Services, we serve families throughout Chicago’s southwest and west suburbs with pediatric physical therapy that focuses on building your child’s confidence and independence through play-based activities.
